Regulations 2027

Participation Requirements:

Athletes must be at least 18 years old and have an adequate level of physical fitness. By registering, athletes confirm that they meet these requirements. Submission of the waiver of the Austrian Triathlon Federation (ÖTRV) as well as the IUTA Waiver (DOUBLE + TRIPLE) prior to registration is mandatory. All information provided in the registration documents must be complete and truthful. For the allocation of swimming lanes, please provide a swimming time that realistically reflects your current performance level. A medical certificate confirming fitness for sport is not required – every participant is expected to act responsibly and ensure that they are fit and healthy when arriving at the start line.

Regulations:

All events (SINGLE, DOUBLE, TRIPLE) are governed by the competition rules of the Austrian Triathlon Federation and the regulations of the International Ultra Triathlon Association (IUTA). In a few specific areas, we have adapted the regulations to the particular circumstances of the Ultra Triathlon:

  • Nutrition during the swim may be provided at the poolside, including by a supporter.

  • Support and provision of nutrition by a supporter is permitted within the athlete camp.

  • Accompanying an athlete on the run course is permitted to a reasonable extent where required for safety reasons.

  • Accompanying athletes on the bike course by car or bicycle is prohibited!

  • External assistance in the event of mechanical problems on the bike course, either by fellow athletes or called-in supporters, is permitted.

  • A 12-metre drafting zone applies. Riding side by side is not permitted.

  • The anti-doping regulations of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the International Ultra Triathlon Association (IUTA) apply.

  • The International Ultra Triathlon Association (IUTA) has specific regulations and requirements for the World Cup classification. The current rules are published here.

Schedule:

The current schedule is available here.

  1. Swimming

The swim starts according to the current schedule (the exact start time will be announced in good time before the event) at Parktherme Bad Radkersburg. The transition to the bike takes place on the Parktherme grounds near the pool. The transition area will be set up here before the start.

The pool is a FINA-certified 50-metre outdoor pool. Athletes must complete 76 lengths (SINGLE ULTRA), 152 lengths (DOUBLE ULTRA) or 228 lengths (TRIPLE ULTRA). Laps are counted by designated lap counters. Nutrition during the swim is permitted at the poolside on the side opposite the start/lap counting area.

1.1. Wearing a wetsuit is permitted but not mandatory. In the event of low outdoor temperatures, the officials reserve the right to make the use of wetsuits mandatory. Other swimming aids such as fins, snorkels or paddles are not permitted.

1.2. A maximum of one supporter per athlete may be present in the transition area and at the poolside.

1.3 Swimming time limits:

  • SINGLE ULTRA: 2:45 hours

  • DOUBLE ULTRA: 4:00 hours

  • TRIPLE ULTRA: 6:00 hours

  1. Cycling

After completing the swim, athletes transition to the bike next to the pool at Parktherme Bad Radkersburg. The transition area ends at the beginning of the access section. Athletes must push their bikes for approximately 50 metres across a grass area before mounting is permitted. After reaching the mount line, there is a 1.3-kilometre transfer section along a cycle path beside the Mur River that is closed to traffic, followed by a short section on public roads. After this access section, the bike course consists of 17/34/51 laps of 10.6 kilometres each. The number of laps has been officially confirmed following course measurement!

2.1. Conduct on the Bike Course

Philosophy of the Cycling Section

Completing the cycling section is an individual effort. Each participant chooses their own pace and completes the cycling section once they have covered the required distance/number of laps. Breaks may be taken at any time. There is no separate classification for the cycling section. The cycling section is considered complete once the required number of laps has been completed.

The bike course follows good, flat roads with relatively little traffic. However, the roads are not closed to public traffic and the Austrian Road Traffic Regulations (STVO) apply at any time and any situation. There are no traffic lights or active railway crossings on the course, but there are several intersections and roundabouts where particular attention is required and right-of-way regulations must be observed at all times. Instructions given by police officers and course marshals must be followed without exception. Discarding bike bottles or nutrition outside the designated area within the athlete camp will result in immediate disqualification. The course can be viewed online in advance and will be marked with signs during the event. Each participant is personally responsible for knowing the course and navigating correctly. The cycling section of the event is considered complete once the required number of laps has been completed.

2.2. Lighting/Equipment

From 7:00 p.m., lights are mandatory on the bike course. A continuous white front light must be mounted on the bicycle (not flashing and visible from a distance of at least 100 metres). The light may be powered by batteries or a rechargeable battery. However, athletes must ensure at all times that sufficient lighting is available and must be able to replace or recharge the light or batteries when necessary. The light must be mounted on the bicycle. A helmet light is optional but is not sufficient as the sole source of illumination. A red continuous or flashing rear light must be mounted on the bicycle. It must be switched on from 7:00 p.m. onwards and must be visible from a distance of at least 150 metres. Wearing reflective clothing and/or attaching reflective strips to the bicycle and equipment during the night is recommended. Wearing a cycling helmet is mandatory at all times when the bicycle is being used. The event number must be worn on the athlete’s back and must remain visible at all times so that officials and marshals can identify the participant and so that motorists can recognise them as an event participant. Each participant is responsible for ensuring that their bicycle and equipment comply with all applicable safety standards. The organiser and officials reserve the right to prevent participants from continuing between 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. if their lighting is considered insufficient.

2.3. Drafting Rules/Penalties

The cycling section must be completed individually over the prescribed course and number of laps without personal accompaniment. Drafting behind or alongside another participant or behind any other non-motorised or motorised vehicle is prohibited. The minimum distance between the front wheel of the leading participant and the front wheel of the following athlete is 12 metres, with a lateral distance of 2 metres. An overtaking manoeuvre must be completed within 30 seconds. Overtaken athletes are responsible for restoring the required distance before attempting to overtake again. Motorised marshals of the Austrian Triathlon Federation (ÖTRV) will monitor compliance with the cycling regulations. **Drafting may
